If you ever wondered why Milan is one of the capitals of fashion, then names like Armani, Fendi, Versace, Valentino, Prada and  Dolce & Gabana are part of the answer.

Some of them were even born in Milan like Stefano Gabbana – a first proof of the existing artistic vibe of this city. Moreover, Stefano met Domenico Dolce in 1980 as well and worked for the same fashion house.

And this leads to the second reason why Milan is so big in fashion. A lot of famous designers started their careers here. As we mentioned “Dolce & Gabbana”, in 1982 they established a designer consulting studio and presented their first women’s collection in 1985 in the wonderful Milan, where a year later their store would open its doors. But this goes way earlier in time. In 1913, Mario Prada and his brother Martino founded as Fratelli Prada (English: Prada Brothers), a leather goods shop, also in Milan.

The first Versace boutique was opened in Milan’s Via della Spiga in 1978. Armani found his first job as a window dresser at La Rinascente, a department store situated where else than Milan?

Even today, some of the world’s top fashion houses have their headquartered in Milan: Gucci, Prada, Valenti SpA, Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, Missoni, Moschino, Luxottica, Trussardi, Etro and Miu Miu.

This famous designers not only created beautiful clothes in Milan, but built empires here. Take Giorgio Armani for instance, one of the biggest in the business. Since Forbes named him most successful Italian designer in 2001, he didn’t t stop from growing. His famous A shaped hotel in via Montenapoleone, part of the well-known “quadrillatero della moda” shopping area, restaurants, club all the cosmetic lines prove there’s not much to stop him from taking over the world.

Still searching for an answer on why Milan…? Let me give you some more proofs.

Because its history in fashion goes back to the 16th century with a trademark in the more traditional style focusing on practical and simple elegance, its high quality materials, because it was the first city in Italy to open a department store (Rinascente) and because via Montenapoleone is considered one of the world’s most 15 luxurious shopping areas.

And if you are interested in pursuing a career in fashion, Milan is the place to be as it offers quite a list of schools among  which one of the top 10 in the world, Instituto Marangoni, where Domenico Dolce and Franco Moschino started their careers.

in 2009, Milan was regarded as the no 1 fashion capital, surpassing New York, Paris  and London! Nowadays it lost a bit of the glory, occupying 6th place. But it is still considered one of the” big 4″ in the fashion world.

Last but certainly not the least: people here are very fashionable. And when it comes to what Italians think about fashion… you just need to look at their shoes.

Most of us girls know how a pair of shoes can change your day… Once a friend of mine told me that she believed a good manicure, a nice piece of underwear and a great pair of shoes is all a woman needs to feel confident.

Growing up, I’ve heard many times how Italian shoes were always the best choice in putting your feet on the ground. I always wondered why. But then I arrived in Milan and things started to make sense:
Italians take pride in their shoes because they also put their heart and soul into making them, still choosing the old fashioned coloring way and sewing them by hand.

At first I was shocked to discover how most women were not letting go of their high heels not even on their way to work. And ladies, we all know how painful that can be sometimes!  Working as a model, I have to say they can be my worst enemies…

Although over time I started to appreciate a good pair of Italian masterpiece shoes, at the end of the day still what matters the most is that my back remains in one piece..

One thing is clear:  Italians don’t always put comfort first, looks take a more important role in their lives. They have impeccable taste in choosing and the right shoes for the right occasion. Most of the times they prefer to wear a simple dress, instead of a designer one, but the shoes are always going to stand out.
